Every year, Allen's mother gives him and his brother, Daniel, a new pair of pajamas and a board game, which they play — no matter how long it takes — before going to bed. He already knows what game he wants this year.

"The new Monopoly with the big towers," he says, his eyes widening. "You can build cities. It's weird."

Nearly six months after Kris Allen scored a remarkable upset victory on American Idol, he still feels like an underdog.

"Some people still don't know I won the show," says the 24-year-old singer from Arkansas, whose self-titled debut album arrives Tuesday.

That's understandable, since runner-up Adam Lambert was the one nabbing the national magazine covers and a prime soundtrack slot in the disaster film 2012. Allen, meanwhile, set about putting together an album of radio-friendly singer/songwriter pop, writing nine of the 12 songs and avoiding the power-ballad clichés that often mar Idol albums.

Allen says the underdog role suits him, but "not in an I-need-to-prove-myself way. I'm very understated. It worked out on the show, and I think it's going to work out in my career, too."

The single Live Like We're Dying isn't flying up the charts, but it's off to a respectable start at No. 23 on USA TODAY's Hot AC airplay chart last week, and No. 38 on the top 40 chart.

Says Ron Harrell, program director at Detroit Hot AC station WDVD-FM: "He's going to put out a good, solid record for you and let the song work on its own, without having to bring any flash to the game."

Allen worked with a variety of people for his album, writing with The Fray's Joe King and Switchfoot's Jon Foreman, as well as former Idol finalist Chris Daughtry. Their Send Me Down an Angel is a bonus track on the Walmart version of Allen's album.

"The one thing I learned from everybody is that they know what they're best at, and they're confident in it," Allen says.

And what does Allen think he's best at?

"Emotionally connecting to a song and being there with it," he says.

To that end, the album contains a song Allen wrote before his Idol journey ever started. It's called Red Guitar, but it's really not about a guitar at all.

"I bought my wife a $50 red guitar for her birthday, and she never played it," Allen says. "We ended up hanging it on the wall because it was a good decoration. One day, I grabbed it off the wall, tuned it up and started writing a song. It ended up being a metaphor for the way I feel about her."

Well, I've gotten one pin done for AA! I'm going to do a non-chibi pin next and see what I like most, then go from there.

Ah... I just figured I should post this here too, as I did it on FB so HEY, WHY NOT? Also I'd love any/all feedback critique. Esp. on the style of the chibi, as I never draw chibi so yeah, it was a bit weird for me.

Does the flag BG look okay, or should it be flat with no filter on it to make it look all textured? I'd like some opinions on it, as I keep going back and forth between liking it and not. xD;;;
